Tokyo Cafe Review: Nagi Shokudo in Shibuya

(See page 2 for the German version)

When you think of Shibuya, you probably think of this always hip and always young fashion and clubbing part of Tokyo, with the world’s famous street intersection, where every two minutes, when the pedestrian lights turn green, hundreds of people cross the street at the same time. But, believe it or not, only a few walking minutes away from the station, there are also quieter neighborhoods, with Italian-inspired restaurants and pancake cafes (quite the trend in Tokyo these days). Right there, about 600 meters away from the train station (South exit), we found the little hidden vegan café/ restaurant Nagi Shokudo (なぎ食堂).

I’m not vegan, but I do not eat meat, and I like the idea of eating something healthy and animal-friendly, if you can say so. Thus, I am delighted that there are quite a few vegan/ vegetarian food options in Tokyo. But back to Nagi Shokudo: For lunch time (12am to 4 pm) you can choose as lunch menu 3 different small dishes that come with brown rice, miso soup and a salad. I ordered fried soy meat with chili sauce, falafel with soy mayonnaise and fried tofu and mushrooms in a tomato-coconut sauce. The food that overall cost 1,250 yen with one drink included, was really good (especially the falafel and soy meat, which even my usually meat-eating friend liked a lot) but I found the amount to be a little bit small for that price. As dessert I could have ordered one of the vegan cakes available (every day there are about 3 different cakes offered), but I eventually decided against it.

I couldn’t decide, if the ambience and interior of the café was cozy or a little shabby, – but especially the ceiling looked not that well-maintained, and generally everything seemed to be not that clean at second glance. I also found a hair in my rice, and the salad did not seem quite as fresh, which clearly is a downside. Nevertheless Nagi Shokudo is a quite nice cafe to visit if you’re looking for a small break from the usual hustle and bustle of Shibuya and want to eat something healthy (or are actually vegan;)).
